After a massive downpour during Canada Day 150 parade it rained money on three Preston Scout House raffle winners

After a major downpour that drenched Canada Day 150 parade participants and spectators, it rained money for three winners in the Preston Scout House Band Inc. raffle. The winning tickets were drawn shortly after a sudden major rain and windstorm swept down the parade route during the Preston parade.

Winner of the $1,000 first prize is Kim Darwin of Kitchener, with ticket # 921. The two $500 prizes were won by Nazrul Islam of Toronto, with ticket # 471 and Jacqueline Wales of Kitchener, with ticket # 099.

Draw tickets were available from members of every group in the organization, including Magic of Scout House winter guard, Preston Scout House Cadets drum and bugle corps, Silver Leaves Brass Ensemble, Scout House Heritage Guard and Scout House Band heritage group of about 100 that marched in the relentless rain through downtown Preston on July 1.

The winning tickets were drawn at the annual Canada Day Scout House barbecue held at Speedsville Columbus Hall, 333 Speedsville Road, following the parade. More than 250 members, family and friends attended the party, which included presentation of the 2017 Wilf Blum youth music scholarship to Justin Schatz, performances by the Silver Leaves Brass Ensemble, the entire heritage band, the glockenspiel section and the drum line.

Chances of winning one the three raffle prizes were relatively high. Only a thousand tickets were sold. Raffle proceeds will help meet the organization’s annual operating expenses. Preston Scout House Band Inc. earlier this year received significant other community financial support: a $5,000 grant from the City of Cambridge and $1,037.50 from the Cambridge and North Dumfries Community Foundation (CNDCF) through the William and Vera Fisher Family Fund.
